Filming beyond Budapest.

Beyond Budapest: filming in Debrecen, Győr, Szentendre, the Puszta, Lake Balaton and rural Hungary — period towns, plains, palaces and doubles for rural America, all inside the rebate.

Budapest is the headline, but Hungary's regions are what let a production expand its look without leaving the rebate. Here is where to go when the city has given you all it can.

Debrecen

Great Reformed Church and city square in Debrecen, Hungary
Great Reformed Church · civic square and Neoclassical scale
Wide pedestrian boulevard with period facades and tram tracks in Debrecen, Hungary
Piac utca · wide boulevard, tram tracks, closable for unit
Quiet period residential street with iron balconies in Debrecen, Hungary
Residential quarter · iron balconies and leafy period streets

Hungary's second city, in the east. The Great Reformed Church anchors a genuinely monumental civic square; Piac utca gives you a broad, controllable boulevard with tram tracks and unbroken period facades; and the residential quarters behind it deliver quiet 19th-century streets with iron balconies for interiors-to-exteriors continuity. A growing local crew base and low-friction permitting make Debrecen a viable second unit or split-from-Budapest base for drama and period work. Two and a half hours from Budapest by road or rail.

Győr

Rooftops and church towers of the old town in Győr, Hungary
Old town rooftops · baroque towers above the rivers
Baroque old town square at dusk with column monument in Győr, Hungary
Széchenyi Square · lamplit baroque square and column monument
Cathedral interior in Győr, Hungary
Győr Cathedral · practical religious interior

A baroque old town where three rivers meet, an hour from the Austrian border and an hour from Budapest. Győr's tight lanes and lamplit squares double convincingly for pre-war Central Europe and small-town Austria or Bavaria; the cathedral gives you a practical religious interior; and the riverbanks add bridges, quays and mills. It pairs naturally with a Vienna or Budapest schedule — strong for period drama, war and thriller.

Szentendre

Pastel houses and cobbled lane sloping to the Danube in Szentendre, Hungary
Cobbled lanes · pastel facades sloping to the Danube
Danube waterfront promenade at golden hour in Szentendre, Hungary
Riverfront promenade · boats, terraces and golden-hour water

On the Danube Bend, half an hour from the studios: pastel riverside lanes, baroque and Serbian Orthodox churches, boat moorings and an artists'-town texture. Postcard old-Europe for romance, drama and gentle period pieces — and close enough to shoot as a day trip from a Budapest base, which keeps per-diems and travel out of the schedule.

Pécs, Szeged & Eger

Pécs · painted cathedral interior, Roman and Ottoman layers outside
Twin-towered Votive Church in Szeged, Hungary
Szeged · monumental Votive Church and Art Nouveau streets
View over Eger, Hungary from the castle
Eger · medieval fortress above a baroque town

Pécs combines Roman remains, Ottoman architecture and a four-towered cathedral; Szeged offers broad Art Nouveau streets and the monumental twin-towered Votive Church; and Eger brings a genuine medieval fortress, baroque center and nearby vineyards. Together they add southern-European, imperial and fortified looks well beyond Budapest.

The Puszta & the Great Plain

Open grassland horizon of the Hortobágy Puszta in Hungary
Hortobágy · big-sky grassland that doubles for the American West

The Hortobágy plains are big-sky grassland that stands in for the American West, the steppe and the frontier — westerns, survival and epic exteriors. Horses, herds and horizon-to-horizon emptiness within a national park.

Lake Balaton & the islands

Shoreline and water of Lake Balaton, Hungary
Balaton shoreline · open water, reeds, marinas and resort towns

Central Europe's largest lake gives you 77 kilometres of shoreline within a two-hour drive of the studios: the Tihany peninsula and its abbey headland for elevated vistas, the northern volcanic hills and vineyards around Badacsony for Mediterranean-adjacent exteriors, and the flat southern shore at Siófok and Balatonfüred for marinas, piers, beach resort and summer sequences. Nearby Hévíz adds a thermal lake, and Margaret Island and the Danube islands add contained, controllable water and greenery for adventure and romance.

Palaces, castles & villages

Visegrád castle above the Danube Bend in Hungary
Visegrád · citadel above the Danube Bend

The Festetics Palace at Keszthely, castles at Visegrád and Eger, and countless villages of clapboard-adjacent farmhouses, barns and dirt roads that read as rural America. This is where historical epics and heartland dramas find their exteriors.

The regions are the reason a single Hungarian production can cover a western, a period drama and a fantasy without a plane ticket.

Logistics

Most regional locations are one to two hours from Budapest, so productions typically base in the city and shoot the regions in blocks. Every kilometre of it stays inside the 30–37.5% rebate. We scout, permit and run the regional units. Explore the genre-tagged library or read the Budapest guide.
