Hungary: the best filming location in Europe.

Europe is full of beautiful places to film. Very few combine the look, the infrastructure and the money the way Hungary does — which is why so much of what you watch, set anywhere from Paris to Mars, was actually shot here.

One country that plays the whole continent

Budapest is the great chameleon. Its boulevards read as Paris, its facades as Vienna, its brick as London, its squares as Berlin or Moscow, its ornate interiors as Rome or Lisbon. Step outside the city and the range widens: palaces like Festetics, castles at Visegrád and Eger, Roman ruins at Aquincum, the plains of the Puszta for the American West, river islands and Lake Balaton for water, and villages that double for small-town USA.

Locations that are already the production design

Much of Budapest needs almost no dressing — the city is the set. The Parliament from the Danube at night, the Chain Bridge, grand cafés, thermal baths, the State Opera and Europe's oldest metro line are camera-ready. That saves build days and money, and it is why we tag every location by the genre it serves: historical epic, thriller, sci-fi, romance, western.

The infrastructure behind the pretty pictures

Locations alone do not make a hub. Hungary backs them with Origo, Korda, NFI, Mafilm and Astra; a deep, English-speaking, non-union crew; 12-hour days without fringes; and a construction base proven on the biggest films in the world. In 2025 Origo became the home of Dune: Messiah, shot entirely on next-generation IMAX cameras.

You can find prettier single locations elsewhere. You cannot find this range, this crew and this rebate in one country.

The money makes it decisive

The tiebreaker is the incentive. A 30–37.5% cash rebate, no per-project cap, no minimum, EU-approved and secured to 2030 — bankable and monetizable upfront — means the most cinematic country in Europe is also one of the most cost-effective. Croatia, Slovakia and much of Western Europe cannot match the combination on a like-for-like build.
