If you are shooting a European-looking film on a controlled budget, three cities dominate the shortlist: Budapest, Prague and Bratislava. All three are beautiful, crewed and incentivized. Here is how they actually compare.

The incentive

Hungary pays a 30% cash rebate structured to 37.5%, with no per-project cap and no minimum, EU-approved to 2030 — and monetizable upfront through partner lenders and banks. Czechia offers a cash rebate around 25% but administered against an annual allocation that can run out mid-year, creating timing risk. Slovakia (Bratislava) runs a cash rebate around 33%, competitive but with a smaller ecosystem. On combination of rate, certainty and liquidity, Hungary leads.

Studios and infrastructure

Prague's Barrandov is historic and excellent. But Budapest's cluster — Origo, Korda, NFI, Mafilm, Astra — is larger in aggregate, newer in parts, and currently home to Dune: Messiah on IMAX. NFI has continental Europe's largest outdoor watertank. Bratislava has stages but a thinner top-end. For scale and choice, Budapest edges Prague and clearly leads Bratislava.

Crew and cost

All three offer skilled, English-speaking crews. Hungary's 12-hour non-union days without fringes and independent-contractor model keep costs tight; the depth of Budapest's crew base means you can staff multiple large productions at once, which matters in a busy year. Prague is comparable but often busier and pricier at the top; Bratislava is cost-effective but shallower.

Locations

Prague is arguably the more pristine single "old Europe" backdrop. Budapest's advantage is range — it plays more cities and, with its regions, more genres, from Roman ruins to plains to palaces. Bratislava frequently works as an extension of a Budapest or Vienna shoot rather than a standalone base.

Prague is a gorgeous backdrop. Budapest is a full production platform — range, stages, crew and a bankable rebate in one place.

The practical takeaway

Prague if you want a specific, well-known old-town look and timing suits its allocation. Bratislava as a cost-effective satellite. Budapest when you want the strongest combination of rebate, stages, crew depth and location range — which, for most foreign productions, is the deciding set. And the three are close enough to combine: many productions base in Budapest and pick up days in the others.
