A large part of why Hungary undercuts Western Europe and North America on a like-for-like build comes down to how crews work here. It is not lower quality — it is a different, leaner labor model.

No unions gating the floor

Hungarian film crews are not union-gated the way London or Toronto are. That removes a layer of overhead, rigidity and fringe cost, and gives productions more flexibility over scheduling and staffing — without sacrificing the skill of the people on set.

12-hour days, no fringes, independent contractors

The standard is a 12-hour working day with no fringes, and crews generally work as independent contractors. For a production, that is a materially lower loaded cost per crew day than in fringe-heavy union markets, and it is one of the biggest single reasons Budapest budgets come in lower.

World-class and English-speaking

The trade-off you might expect — cheaper means greener — does not apply. Decades of tentpole work (Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Poor Things) have built a deep bench of heads of department and technicians who are among the best in Europe and comfortable working in English. You are getting elite crew at a leaner cost, not a discount for inexperience.
